Artur Kula

Advocate, member of the Warsaw Bar Association. Chairman of the Human Rights Section of the District Bar Council in Warsaw and Member of the Human Rights Commission of the Polish Bar Council. PhD. Previously, he worked i.a. at the International Criminal Court in The Hague.

Artur Kula specialises in criminal and administrative proceedings. He works on LGBTI+ rights, anti-discrimination law and represents activits. Artur regularly collaborates with the anti-repression collective Szpila.

During his work at KMA, he acted as:

  • a counsel during an all-night search of the Crisis Intervention Point of the Club of Catholic Intelligentsia, which was conducted by police officers at the Polish-Belarusian border. Artur led to the awarding of reparations by the District Court in Warsaw to the persons who were present at the Crisis Intervention Point that night [more];
  • a counsel of journalists unlawfully detained by Polish Army soldiers at the Polish-Belarusian border. Artur convinced the Military District Court in Warsaw to overturn the decision of the prosecution to refuse to open an investigation into the case. He also led to the awarding of reparations to the journalists by the District Court in Białystok [more];
  • a defense counsel for an LGBTI+ activist accused of organising a public assembly in Dębica in violation of the law. Artur led to the acquittal of the activist [more].
Over the past five years, Artur has worked with a number of NGOs specialising in the protection of human rights, including the Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights, the Campaign Against Homophobia, the Love Does Not Exclude Association, the Club of Catholic Intelligentsia in Warsaw, and the Border Group.

In addition to his legal practice, Artur is also a researcher. In 2024, he received his PhD from the École des hautes études en sciences sociales (EHESS) in Paris and the University of Warsaw on the subject of treason in Polish social imaginaries of the 19th century. In 2022/2023, he was a Kosciuszko Foundation research fellow at the University of California, Berkeley. He received his master’s degree in history from the University of Oxford.
